Abstract Details

Purpose:

To estimate functional results after reoperation for additional correction using CIRCLE technology with application of VisuMax femtosecond laser and MEL-80 excimer laser in case of refractive effect regression after SMILE operation.

Setting:

IRTC Eye Microsurgery Ekaterinburg Center, Ekaterinburg, Russia

Methods:

We studied a group of patients with refractive effect regression 1 year after SMILE operation for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. Reoperation for additional correction (CIRCLE) was performed with application of VisuMax femtosecond laser. Corneal flap was separated from the stromal bed and turned aside. Excimer laser ablation of the stromal bed was performed with MEL 80. Corneal flap was replaced and rinsed from both sides. Edge of the flap was dried. Uncorrected (UCVA) and corrected (BCVA) visual acuity as well as spherical equivalent (SE) were estimated before reoperation, at 1 day and 1 month after it.

Results:

After reoperation BCVA and UCVA have improved. Refraction became close to emmetropia. Before reoperation UCVA was 0.23 ± 0.18, after reoperation it has significantly improved and made 0.93 ± 0.11 (p<0.05). SE before reoperation was 1.86 ± 1.15D by absolute value, after reoperation it made 0 ± 0 D (p<0.05). BCVA before reoperation was 0.95 ± 0.1, did not significantly change after it and made 0.93 ± 0.11 (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

Reoperation for additional correction using CIRCLE technology with application of VisuMax femtosecond laser and MEL-80 excimer laser provides an increase of visual acuity in case of refractive effect regression after SMILE operation.
