Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes ,quality of vision and patient satisfaction in different age groups of patients underwent laser-assisted cataract surgery with implantation of the Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive multifocal IOL.

Setting:

Eye Center “East Sight Recovery”, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

86 eyes of 54 patients underwent femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification (Victus, USA) with implantation of the Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive multifocal IOL (Abbot t Medical Optics) were divided into 3 age groups: 50s (50 to 59 years of age) - 22 eyes of 14 patients, 60s (60 to 69 years of age ) -36 eyes of 22 patients and 70s (over 70 years of age)- 28 eyes of 20 patients. Postoperatively, uncorrected distance and near visual acuities, spectacle dependence, optical phenomena and general patient satisfaction were determined and compared between groups. Follow-up period was 6-18 months.

Results:

Uncorrected distance visual acuity 20/25 or better was achieved in 90 % in 50s and 60s groups and in 86% in 70s group. Uncorrected near visual acuity 20/40 (J3) or better - in 77,3% in 50s group , 75% - in 60s group , and in 68 % in 70s group . All patients did not wear glasses for daily activities. Reading spectacles were used by 3 patients (15%) in 70s group. Moderate or low level of glare and halos was reported in 36 % in 50s patients. Low level of halo perception was reported in 22,7% in 60s group and 15% in 70s patients .

Conclusions:

The femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery with implantation of the Tecnis ZMB00 diffractive multifocal IOL provides an effective restoration of the distance and near visual functions and high level of patient satisfaction. Uncorrected distance visual acuity was better in 50s and 60s patients than in 70s patients. Uncorrected near visual acuity was better in 50s patients than in 60s and 70s patients. But the 50s patients were more sensitive to optical phenomena and had a higher frequency of PCO than 60s and 70s patients . The highest level of patient satisfaction was achieved in 60s patients .
