Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the mean postoperative effective lens position (ELP) and actual amount of axial movement of two aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs) using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, National Hospital Organization, Tokyo Medical Center

Methods:

A single-piece toric IOL (AcrySof IQ Toric: Alcon) was implanted in 25 eyes of 18 patients, and a single-piece IOL (Vivinex iSert: HOYA) was implanted in 29 eyes of 22 patients. Follow-up ELP measurements by AS-OCT (CASIA2 SS-2000: TOMEY, Nagoya, Japan) were taken 4 days and 1, and 3 months postoperatively. The ELP was defined as the distance between the posterior corneal surface and the anterior IOL surface at each follow-up timepoint.

Results:

The mean postoperative ELPs of Vivinex iSert were 4.20 ± 0.35 (4 days), 4.08 ± 0.29 (1 month), and 4.05 ± 0.29 mm (3 months), respectively. The mean postoperative ELPs of AcrySof IQ Toric were 4.24 ± 0.29 (4 days), 4.26 ± 0.29 (1 month), and 4.23 ± 0.27 mm (3 months), respectively. The Vivinex iSert showed significant changes in mean ELP, from 4 days to 1 month and from 4 days to 3 months, postoperatively (p=0.006 and p<0.001, respectively). The AcrySof IQ Toric did not show significant changes either from 4 days to 1 month or from 4 days to 3 months (p=0.38 and p=0.32, respectively).

Conclusions:

After implantation, the one-piece acrylic foldable AcrySof IQ Toric IOLs showed little axial movement. Even though the two study IOLs are made of similar acrylic materials, other characteristics may affect IOL stability in the bag.
