Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the results of 22 eyes with irregular astigmatism treated with a new pinhole intraocular implant, designed for supplementary sulcus fixation. Mean follow-up of 18 months.

Setting:

University of Sao Paulo

Methods:

This study was designed as a prospective interventional non-randomized self-paired case series to determine the safety and efficacy of a new pinhole intraocular implant, for the treatment of irregular corneal astigmatism. 22 eyes of 21 patients with irregular corneal astigmatism and disphotopic complaints (keratoconus, post-radial keratotomy and post-penetrating keratoplasty) were enrolled. The pre and post-operative examination included uncorrected visual acuity (distance, intermediate and near) under standardized luminance level of 85 candelas (cd)/m2; manifest refraction; anterior chamber depth and central keratometry (Pentacam, Oculus, Germany); endothelial cell count (CEM-530, Nidek, Japan); pupil diameter evaluation (Colvart pupilometer, Oasis, USA), and slit lamp evaluation.

Results:

All eyes had statistically significant improvement of UCVA as well as reduction of glare and disphotopias. The device was well tolerated and achieved proper centration in the ciliary sulcus.

Conclusions:

This new pinhole intraocular implant was able to safely minimize the impact of corneal aberration in cases of irregular corneal astigmatism.
