Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate objective and subjective outcomes and its association with the implant of a new diffractive trifocal IOL in a case series in the Mexican population.

Setting:

Location: Institución Conde de Valenciana México City, México.

Methods:

Prospective and no Interventional Study in a series of patients who underwent cataract surgery with implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens Physiol (Liege, Belgium). Uncorrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected near visual acuity, intermediate visual acuity without correction 70, 60, 50 and 40 cm was analyzed. Postoperative controls were performed at 1, 3 and 6 months. Aberrometry was performed to determine higher order aberrations Root Mean-Square (RMS), Point Spread Function (PSF), contrast sensitivity with Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). The subjective results were analyzed by the VFQ-25 questionnaire and a questionnaire for our service.

Results:

Uncorrected Distance Visual Acuity presented a mean logMAR 0.06 (0.11), Intermediate vision: a 70 cm logMAR 0.04 (0.08), 60 cm logMAR 0.13 (0.08), 50 cm logMAR 0.12 (0.06) 40 cm logMAR 0.05 (0.08) and 0.03 logMAR nearby AV (0.04). The spherical equivalent was 0.23 (0.4). The mean power of the IOL implanted was 20.9 (3.2) diopters.Aberrometry results where RMS average was 0.18 microns and the PSF studied with the Strehl ratio, presented an average of 0.19. The overall result of the questionnaire VFQ-25 was classified as excellent. The result of the sub-scales studied were in a range of excellent. The results of adverse effects with multifocal lenses had an average located in the range of 'never-occasionally'

Conclusions:

The implantation of trifocal diffractive IOL was a safe and effective procedure that provides excellent results of visual acuity in the far, intermediate and near distance. The objective and subjective results were excellent presenting an excellent overall patient satisfaction with a good quality of life and low presence of adverse effects.
