Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes, refractive outcomes and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of diffractive trifocal intraocular Lens with enhanced depth of focus

Setting:

King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand

Methods:

Thirty eyes of 15 patients had bilateral implantation of diffractive trifocal IOL (Acriva Reviol Tri-ED, VSY biotechnology). Complete ophthalmologic examination were performed at baseline and 6 months after surgery. The monocular and binocular visual acuity consisting of uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected (UIVA) and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) as well as uncorrected (UNVA) and distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) were measured in logMAR. Refractive parameters, best distance-corrected monocular and binocular contrast sensitivity under photopic condition and defocus curve were also measured. Furthermore, spectacle independence, photic phenomena and overall patient satisfaction were assessed using a questionnaire.

Results:

At 6 months after surgery, mean binocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA were -0.03±0.06, 0.04±0.15, and -0.05±0.09 logMAR, respectively. Mean binocular postoperative CDVA, DCIVA, and DCNVA were -0.07±0.06, 0.01±0.06, and -0.05±0.09 logMAR, respectively. Postoperative spherical equivalent was ±0.50 D and ±1.0 D in 84.6% and 96.2% of eyes respectively. Binocular photopic contrast sensitivity was within normal limits. The defocus curve showed a wide continuous range of good intermediate vision with visual acuity of 0.2 logMAR or better. Photic phenomena were mild. 87% of patients reported spectacle independence with high satisfaction regarding their distance, intermediate and near visual function.

Conclusions:

Bilateral implantation of the diffractive trifocal intraocular lens with enhanced depth of focus (Acriva Reviol Tri-ED) seems to achieve good refractive and visual outcomes with high spectacle independence rate, and satisfactory uncorrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate, and near. Patient satisfaction was high with mild photic phenomena while maintaining contrast sensitivity.
