Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) using surface modified intraocular lens (IOL) in 5 years postoperatively.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan.

Methods:

Subjects comprised 60 eyes that underwent phacoemulsification. Surface modified hydrophobic acrylic IOL (SP2, HOYA) or three piece IOL (FY-60AD, HOYA) were randomly implanted. The mean age of patients is 70.8±8.6. Slit and retroillumination Images were taken using an EAS-1000 (NIDEK) after 5 year postoperatively. The slit images were photographed from 2 directions (0 and 90 degree) and the scattered light intensity on posterior (PCO) of IOLs were measured and compared. The retroillumination images were captured in image analysis software (Scion image, scion), and PCO densities in optic and haptic area are measured and compared.

Results:

The scattered light intensities on posterior of SP2 and FY-60AD were 6.50±5.70 CCT and 11.64±9.30 CCT after 5 years. There were statistically significances. The PCO densities of optic and haptic area in SP2 were 30711.3±10351.6 pixels and 35205.6±12743.9 pixels, FY-60AD were 31693.0±6243.6 pixels and 54107.6±31668.0 pixels after 3 years. In SP2, the PCO development from haptic area was inhibited.

Conclusions:

Surface modified hydrophobic acrylic IOL (SP2) is prevented PCO by inhibition the development PCO in Haptic area. The surface modification of IOLs will be a major step to prevent PCO.
