A novel method for trimming artificial iris during surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present own technique for intraoperative trimming of artificial iris (initial diameter 2.8mm) according to the WTW of the patient

Setting:

Ophthalmology Clinic, Athens Metropolitan Hospital

Methods:

The artificial iris (Humanoptics, Germany) is manufactured as a standard diameter of 2.8mm . To trim, 0.5mm is added to the average of the horizontal and vertical WTW diameter of the eye. Half of the resulted diameter is adjusted on a caliper. The caliper is centered in the center of iris and circular perforations on the iris tissue are made every 15-20 degrees. Tracing and connecting these perforations the iris is cut circumferentially with Vannas scissors to the appropriate size.

Results:

This novel method is applied to 6 artificial irises. The diameter of all trimmed irises had less than 1 mm difference from the intended cut. No movement of artificial iris was observed in any of the eyes three months postop.

Conclusions:

This novel technique for artificial iris trimming can replace trephine cuts accurately in cases where these are not available.
