Abstract Details

To show the effectiveness of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) for sutured leaking corneal wounds.

Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, Center of Eye Diseases, Lithuania.

Medical histories of eleven patients with sutured but leaking corneal wounds were analyzed.

AMT was performed for eight patients with traumatic leaking corneal wound and for three patients after cornea transplantation. Four AMT were performed after penetrating corneal foreign body removal and residual corneal tissue defect, three because of irregular penetrating corneal wound, and one for the thermal burn after phacoemulsification. Three patients were operated because of the cornea graft melting. Therapeutic contact lens was placed in all cases. There were any intraoperative and postoperative complications related to AMT, and the leakage was stopped successfully.

Amniotic membrane transplantation is an effective method for the sutured leaking corneal wound. The procedure can be performed during the initial corneal suturing or as the second step surgery.
